If you aren’t Gen Z or an Internet addict like myself, you might not know about lofi hiphop [chill beats to relax / study to]. These mellow beats to play in the background while you study / hangout are a music genre birthed by the internet itself. Living mostly on YouTube and Soundcloud but spreading to Spotify and other platforms, these songs created often by anonymous beat makers have carved out their own section of the internet and caused controversy when the most famous live feed was accidentally taken down.

This internet culture has it’s own aesthetic and vibe (a word they are VERY fond of using). The internet being the internet, this has led to some very interesting mashups featuring lofi hiphop music played underneath (and sometimes drowning out) samples of speeches from film and politics.

When I saw this, I knew I wanted to get in the game and try to introduce Gen Z / the internet to speeches I wanted them to hear. I also wanted a project that involved Adobe Premiere so I launched my own YouTube channel — lofi s a l o n — named after the French salons where ideas were exchanged in revolutionary France.
